Maybe vs May Be – Know the Difference & Usage
The difference between maybe and may be is simple but crucial. Maybe (one word) is an adverb meaning "perhaps" or "possibly" — it usually starts a sentence. May be (two words) is a verb phrase where may is a modal verb and be is the main verb — together they express possibility. This lesson explains both with plenty of examples and mini-conversations.
1. Maybe (Adverb)
Meaning: Perhaps; possibly.
Position: Usually at the beginning of a sentence (before the subject and verb). It can also be used as a short answer.
