How to Use “Vice Versa” Correctly in English Writing & Speaking

The phrase vice versa (a Latin expression) is used in English as an adverbial phrase meaning “the other way around” or “in the opposite order”. It indicates that the previous statement is also true when the order of the subjects and objects is reversed. Mastering this simple but powerful phrase will make your English sound more concise and sophisticated.

What Does “Vice Versa” Mean?

In simple terms, vice versa tells us that the relationship just described also works the opposite way. Instead of repeating a whole reversed sentence, we just say “and vice versa”.

📘 Basic Example

Tom helps John and vice versa.

Meaning: Tom helps John, and John (also) helps Tom.

Here, the phrase vice versa replaces “John helps Tom”, which is the reverse of the first part.

When NOT to Use “Vice Versa”

The statement must be logically reversible. If the reversed version doesn't make sense, you cannot use vice versa.

❌ Incorrect (Illogical)

I like to drink cold coffee and vice versa.

If we reverse it, it becomes “Cold coffee likes to drink me”, which is absurd. So, never use vice versa in such illogical situations.

Using “Not Vice Versa”

You can also use not vice versa to specify that the reverse is not true.

📘 Example

All dogs are animals, but not vice versa.

Meaning: All dogs are animals, but all animals are not dogs (the reverse is false).

Girls like wearing boys' clothing, but not vice versa. (Boys don't like wearing girls' clothing.)

More Examples of Correct Usage

1) I know Jack very well and vice versa. (= Jack also knows me very well.)

2) Men should respect women and vice versa. (= Women should also respect men.)

3) Tom told John that a magician can convert white paper into black paper and vice versa. (= He can also convert black paper into white paper.)

4) John doesn't like Tom and vice versa. (= Tom also doesn't like John.)

🧠 Important Points to Remember

  • The phrase vice versa comes after a statement and indicates that the reverse is also true.
  • It must be logically possible to reverse the statement; otherwise, don't use it.
  • Use not vice versa when the reverse is false.
  • It's a concise alternative to repeating the whole sentence in reverse.

English is a language just like your mother tongue. The more you practise phrases like vice versa, the more naturally you'll incorporate them into your speaking and writing. Start using it in your own sentences today!
